Choir & Music
St. Luke's Church
Choir:
-
is made up of men and women, boys and girls, from the ages of 7 to
70.
- sings a
variety of music, both ancient and modern, in 4 part harmony,
providing a lead at regular church services and enriching worship
through special anthems.
- provides
friendship and fellowship amongst a group of people who enjoy making
music.
- makes a
valuable contribution towards the life and worship of the church.
- it's affiliated
to the Royal School of Church Music.
Belonging to the
church choir means a commitment to attend:
- for
adults and teenagers: Friday evening rehearsals from 8.00 p.m. to
9.15 p.m. except during August and immediately after Christmas and
Easter.
- for
Junior Choristers: late afternoon or early evening rehearsals for 1
hour once a week on a day to be fixed, increasing to include the
first half hour of the adults Friday evening rehearsals, except as
mentioned above.
- 10 a.m.
Services each Sunday
- 6 p.m.
Choral Evensong services approximately once every 6 weeks

rehearsals immediately before services
- option
to sing at fortnightly services of Evensong
- option
to sing at weddings in the church when the choir is requested
For young people
being a member of the choir provides:
- a basic
education in music literacy and vocal technique
-
experience of a wide variety of church music
-
opportunity to build confidence by performing music as a soloist, if
desired
-
discipline and self-control when taking part in services
- training
in singing and musical ability through the R.S.C.M. Voice for Life
scheme
- Pay - a
set amount for each rehearsal and service, and extra fees for
weddings
-
opportunity for parental support and involvement
- outings
to special musical events e.g. R.S.C.M. Joint Choral Evensongs,
Deanery Services.
The choir has a
termly programme of regular service music and special pieces to
rehearse.
There is a termly
choir meeting to deal with matters of organisation and hear suggestions
from choir members.
The choir has time
off from rehearsals after Christmas and Easter, and during the whole
month of August.
Every effort is made
in the organisation of choir activities to comply with legislation on
Child Protection in accordance with policies of the Diocese of Oxford.
